The 2021 K-12 InVenture Prize State Finals event was held virtually through the RocketJudge platform with 72 judges evaluating 77 teams (141 students) who were competing for awards and a spot to the national competition at Invention Convention Worldwide.

Children tend to overeat candies and suffer from cavities. The focus of this innovation is to create a simple candy dispenser which limits the number of candies to two during a day. There will be a possibility to choose any set of 2 times 12 hours apart for candy drop from the dispenser (e.g., 6 A.M. and 6 P.M.).

Although there is a rising awareness of concussions in teen contact-sports, it is estimated that 66% (PubMed) of concussions go undetected. Our team has created an inexpensive chip that goes inside the padding at the back of football helmets. This chip provides real-time acceleration data that assists in the diagnosis of a concussion. If a player was to receive a concussion-level impact, the computer would alert a coach or staff at that moment and allow the athletic trainer to take the appropriate measures.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer. Melanomas represent a small but significant number of skin cancers worldwide, as over 75% of all skin-cancer-related deaths are from melanoma. Using machine learning, My Skin App serves as a diagnostic tool which can help identify melanoma skin cancer earlier and prevent possible deaths, as the survival rate for melanoma is 99% if detected early but only 14% if detected at a later stage. The app uses all custom-built (by us) Coarse-to-Fine Contextual Memory networks, a custom data augmentation pipeline, and convolutional neural networks.

Select teams from the K-12 InVenture Prize State Finals advanced to represent the State of Georgia at the Raytheon Technologies Invention Convention U.S. Nationals. Of the seventeen teams that were invited to the national competition, five teams placed and received awards!
